About The Class

Welcome to Outdoor Adventure and Orienteering! This class is a great opportunity to explore nature while moving our bodies and experiencing functional fitness! Participants will experience elements of orienteering, letterboxing and scavenger hunts combined with bodyweight fitness movements. This class practices teamwork, social skills and goal setting all combined into one unique experience!

About Your Instructor

Jackie is a Certified PE Teacher and Lead Trainer at the Fitness Center. She teaches adventure education and is a creative and thoughtful class leader. She makes fitness fun!

United Striders Track Team

Instructor: Nadia Wilson

Time & Day

Fridays 3:45-4:30 PM

Course Dates: April 23, 30, 

May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4, 11.

8 Week Program Cost

Member Rate: $245

Optional Track Meet: Date TBD. Additional fee to participate.

About The Class

The United Striders Track Team is a group of runners and walkers. Each practice will start with a warm up and stretch before going around the track in pace groups. Everyone is supported no matter their speed! Our goal is to end the season with a track meet to showcase our teams season long accomplishments.

About Your Instructor

Nadia is a Personal Trainer at the Fitness Center and a long time track and field competitor. Coaching and training at the Fitness Center gives her an opportunity to share her interests in sports and fitness with people with special needs. Nadia is currently earning her MS in speech-language pathology while also offering personal training sessions at the Fitness Center and coaching the United Striders Track Team.

Parkour!

Instructor: Brendan Bogan

About The Class

A definition of Parkour is using one’s environment to get from point A to point B in the most efficient and creative way you possibly can. 

The goal for students of this class is to become more comfortable with any type of movement, from getting out of a car, walking up stairs, dancing, and even learning to fall. Things they can expect to gain from this class are better balance, coordination, self-esteem, team work, confidence, independence, resilience and creativity with movement. Students will be challenged individually and as a team to complete movement based challenges.

About Your Instructor

Brendan is a WFPF Level 2 Instructor, Certified Ninja Zone instructor, CTRS, and has a BS from SCSU in Therapeutic Recreation. He has been training in parkour for 7 years.  Brendan teaches parkour, dance and gymnastics to youth with autism and special needs and is excited to join the AHFC team!

Fabulous Fitness

About The Class

The central focus of this class is to develop cognitive, affective and psychomotor abilities. Mainly focusing on locomotor skills or traveling skills such as: skipping, galloping, walking, and jogging. Students will also be exposed to fitness concepts such as flexibility and cardiovascular health.  For instance, “when we walk we are working on our most important muscle, OUR HEART!” Students will learn about health & fitness through movement and why that’s important for a long & healthy life.

About Your Instructor

Jesse is a Certified Physical Education Teacher in New Haven and has experience teaching Adaptive Physical Education at the school he works at. He’s passionate about getting student athletes moving and having fun while doing it, and it shows in his enthusiasm he brings to every single class.  Members may remember Jesse from our summer camp program as he has been involved for several years.

Volunteer Experience

Volunteer Training: Tuesday, April 6th from 5:30-6:15 PM.

Course Dates: Volunteers will choose one or more group class to volunteer at. Review class times in this catalog to choose.

About The Class

This program is for typical peers in middle and high school who want to volunteer while having fun and making a difference in the lives of people with different needs. Participants register for our training workshops then pick one (or more!) of our group classes to support. The Workshop sets them up for success by sharing what to expect and exactly how to be a helpful and supportive volunteer. They’ll also participate in a diversity activity designed to foster empathy and consider what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes. Learn valuable job skills, fulfill volunteer requirements for school or church, and meet new friends. This will be a volunteer experience you’ll never forget!

About Your Instructors

Angela is the Director at AHFC and Jackie is the Lead Trainer. Together they’ve designed a training program that will introduce young people to a positive and purposeful experience.

Who Should Sign Up

Any middle or high school student who wants to make a positive impact in the lives of people with special needs. This could include students exploring career paths working with this population or within the fitness industry. We welcome students fulfilling volunteer requirements.
